Discover the heart of the Sumatran jungle

The 1-Day Jungle Life trek is designed to maximise your time in the rainforest and provide excellent opportunities to observe orangutans and other wildlife.

Your certified local guide will lead you into Gunung Leuser National Park, introduce you to the rainforest ecosystem, and help you look for orangutans, monkeys, gibbons, hornbills, reptiles, and tropical plants.

All animals live freely in their natural habitat, so sightings can never be guaranteed. Our guides always follow responsible wildlife practices and do their best to create a safe, educational, and rewarding experience.

Meet Your Guide

Your guide collects you from your accommodation in Bukit Lawang and gives a short introduction before walking towards the national park.

Enter the Rainforest

Begin trekking through Gunung Leuser National Park while searching for orangutans and learning about the forest ecosystem.

Tropical Fruit Break

Enjoy seasonal fruit such as pineapple, bananas, passion fruit, rambutan, or tangerines beneath the rainforest canopy.

Continue Trekking

Follow the jungle trails while looking for monkeys, gibbons, hornbills, reptiles, insects, and other wildlife.

Indonesian Jungle Lunch

Stop for fried rice with vegetables, egg, chicken, and fresh fruit. Vegetarian meals and dietary requests can be arranged in advance.

Afternoon Wildlife Trek

Continue deeper through the forest along the most suitable route for wildlife observation and the abilities of the group.

Bohorok River & Return

Rest beside the river, swim when conditions allow, and return either on foot or by traditional tube raft.

Back in Bukit Lawang

Finish your rainforest adventure and return to your hotel or guesthouse.

Every trek is different. The following species are present in the Bukit Lawang rainforest, but wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

Rare wildlife: Gunung Leuser is also home to Sumatran tigers, elephants, rhinoceroses, Malayan sun bears, and Sunda clouded leopards. These animals are extremely elusive and should not be expected during a normal one-day trek.

  • Camera or phone in a waterproof bag
  • Plastic bag for wet clothing
Clothing and footwear

Wear lightweight, breathable, quick-drying clothes. Long sleeves and trousers provide extra protection but are optional. Choose comfortable walking shoes or secure trekking sandals with good grip. Do not wear flip-flops or brand-new shoes.

Fitness and trail conditions

An average to above-average fitness level is recommended. Trails may be steep, uneven, wet, muddy, and slippery. Please tell us before booking about mobility limitations, injuries, or medical conditions.

Trekking with children

Children are welcome, but parents should consider whether their child can walk for several hours in hot and humid conditions. The route and pace may be adapted to family needs.

  • Take all rubbish out of the forest
  • Follow your guide’s instructions
  • Tell us if you feel unwell before the trek
Return options

Return to Bukit Lawang on foot at no additional cost, or choose traditional tube rafting along the Bohorok River. The rafting option is normally €10 per person and supports the local rafting team.
