Mount Marapi is an active volcano, not a routine tourist hike.
Mount Marapi in West Sumatra remained at Level II (Waspada) in late July 2026. PVMBG guidance prohibited visitors and residents from entering or carrying out activities within three kilometres of Kawah Verbeek, the centre of volcanic activity.

How many nights should we stay in Bukittinggi?
Two nights give enough time for the city and one nearby cultural
experience. Three nights are better when adding Harau Valley,
Tanah Datar or a more relaxed highland day.
Is the centre easy to explore on foot?
Yes. Jam Gadang, Pasar Atas and several central attractions are
walkable. A driver is more useful for village visits, Harau Valley
and the wider highlands.
Can we hike Mount Marapi?
Do not treat Mount Marapi as a routine hike. It remained an active
Level II volcano in late July 2026, with a three-kilometre exclusion
zone around Kawah Verbeek. Check MAGMA Indonesia and follow current
PVMBG and local authority instructions.
What is the best time of day for Ngarai Sianok?
Early morning often provides softer light, cooler conditions and a
better chance of clear views before mist, rain or crowds build.
What clothing should we bring?
Pack modest, comfortable clothing, a light warm layer, rain
protection and shoes with grip. Highland evenings and wet mornings
can feel cool.
Can Bukittinggi be combined with Bukit Lawang?
Yes, but it is a long overland journey across Sumatra. A planned
overnight stop or a flight connection via another city may be more
comfortable depending on your available time.
