Arrival and the gateway to the jungle

Meet your driver at the airport or a Medan hotel and begin a private scenic transfer of around four to five hours. Check in beside the Bohorok River and relax in the rainforest setting. When timing allows, explore Bukit Lawang village or visit the Bat Cave.

Gunung Leuser National Park · Trek Day 1

Orangutans and a night in the rainforest

After breakfast, start the first day of your 2D/1N ethical jungle trek. Walk for approximately seven to eight hours while learning about tropical plants, wildlife and traditional medicinal uses. Search for orangutans, Thomas’s leaf monkeys, gibbons, hornbills and other forest species before reaching a simple riverside bamboo camp.

Swim or rest by the river while the jungle team prepares dinner, then sleep on a mattress beneath a mosquito net surrounded by forest sounds.

Forest trails and the Jungle Taxi

Wake to the sounds of gibbons and birds. After breakfast, continue through the rainforest for around six to seven hours. Observe life near the river, where monitor lizards, tortoises and butterflies may appear, and stop for lunch beside the Bohorok River.

Finish with a traditional tube-rafting return through the forest, then check back into your Bukit Lawang accommodation.

Bukit Lawang → Berastagi

From tropical forest to the Karo Highlands

Travel roughly three and a half hours to Berastagi. On the way, visit the abandoned Ghost Village connected with Mount Sinabung’s 2010 eruption. After hotel check-in, explore the cool highland town and its fruit market, known for local strawberries, passionfruit and fresh produce.

Mount Sibayak → Lake Toba

Sunrise volcano hike, hot springs and Sipiso-piso

Start around 04:15 for the sunrise hike up Mount Sibayak, reaching 2,094 metres. The ascent takes about 90 minutes and leads toward steaming volcanic vents and wide highland views. Descend for a relaxing soak in natural hot springs.

After lunch, continue for approximately five to six hours toward Lake Toba. Stop at traditional Dokan Village and the 120-metre Sipiso-piso waterfall before crossing by ferry from Parapat to Samosir Island.

Samosir Island

Batak history, dance and panoramic lake views

Discover the culture of the Batak Toba people. Visit Ambarita Village and the stone chairs of King Siallagan, continue to Simanindo for a traditional dance performance and enjoy a coffee break at Panorama Parhalow.

The afternoon is free for swimming, lakeside relaxation or an optional traditional Batak massage.

After breakfast, take the ferry back to Parapat and continue by private vehicle to Medan, normally around five to six hours. When flight timing allows, add a short city visit to Maimun Palace, the Great Mosque and Tjong A Fie Mansion before hotel or airport drop-off.
