01 · THE JOURNEY
Rainforest, wildlife and volcanic highlands
This five-day North Sumatra adventure combines two very different landscapes: the tropical rainforest surrounding Bukit Lawang and the cool volcanic highlands of Berastagi.
Spend two days exploring Gunung Leuser National Park with local guides, searching responsibly for orangutans and other wildlife before sleeping beside the river in a simple jungle camp.
Afterwards, travel into the Karo Highlands to discover Berastagi, its colourful fruit market and the volcanic landscapes surrounding Mount Sibayak.
The tour is designed for travelers looking for a balanced mix of adventure, wildlife, nature and local culture without having to organise each part of the journey separately.

04 · DAY BY DAY
Your 5-day North Sumatra itinerary
Exact timing can change according to traffic, weather, trail conditions and local circumstances.
01
Medan → Bukit Lawang
Arrival & journey to the rainforest
Meet our team at your Medan hotel or Kuala Namu International Airport and travel approximately 3–4 hours to Bukit Lawang, a village beside Gunung Leuser National Park.
After check-in, enjoy free time to relax, explore the village or sit beside the Bohorok River. Depending on your arrival time, a visit to the nearby Bat Cave can also be arranged.

Gunung Leuser National Park
Orangutan trekking & jungle camp
After breakfast, meet your guide at approximately 08:30 and begin your journey into Gunung Leuser National Park.
Walk through tropical rainforest while your guide explains the wildlife, plants and forest ecosystem. Depending on nature, you may encounter orangutans, Thomas leaf monkeys, white-handed gibbons, macaques, hornbills, monitor lizards and other wildlife.
After lunch, continue deeper into the jungle. In the late afternoon the team prepares camp beside the river.
Swim, relax or watch the team prepare dinner before spending the night surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

Jungle → Bukit Lawang
Waterfall & river return
Wake up in the rainforest and continue the jungle adventure for approximately two to three hours while looking for wildlife along the trail.
Visit a waterfall where you can swim and relax before lunch.
Afterwards, leave the jungle camp and return downstream toward Bukit Lawang on a traditional jungle-style river raft.
Check in again at Green Travelodge or a partner accommodation and enjoy the rest of the day at your own pace.

Bukit Lawang → Berastagi
From rainforest to the Karo Highlands
At approximately 09:00, leave Bukit Lawang and travel 3–4 hours into the cooler Karo Highlands toward Berastagi.
Visit Berastagi's colourful fruit market and experience the atmosphere of this highland town.
The afternoon is free for you to explore independently. You may take a traditional Sado horse-carriage ride or arrange an additional local activity.

Mount Sibayak → Medan
Sunrise volcano hike & return to Medan
Start early at approximately 04:30 for a memorable guided hike on Mount Sibayak.
Experience the volcanic landscape and panoramic morning views before stopping at the hot springs to relax.
The activity includes an English-speaking guide, transportation to and from the volcano, entrance fees and takeaway breakfast.
Later, travel back to your Medan hotel or Kuala Namu International Airport. The journey normally takes approximately 3–4 hours depending on traffic.
