Discover the heart of the Sumatran rainforest

The 1-Day Jungle Life trek is designed to make the most of your time in Gunung Leuser National Park while keeping the pace comfortable and responsible.

Your certified local guide will lead you through the rainforest, explain the ecosystem, and help you search for orangutans, monkeys, gibbons, hornbills, reptiles, insects, and tropical plants.

Every day in the forest is different. The route may be adjusted to suit weather, trail conditions, wildlife activity, and the fitness of the group.

Your guide collects you from your Bukit Lawang accommodation and gives a short safety briefing.

Begin trekking through Gunung Leuser National Park while searching for wildlife and learning about the ecosystem.

Rest beneath the canopy and enjoy a selection of fresh seasonal fruit.

Continue wildlife trekking

Follow natural jungle trails while looking for orangutans, monkeys, birds, reptiles, and other forest life.

Indonesian jungle lunch

Enjoy fried rice with vegetables, egg, chicken, and fresh fruit. Dietary requests can be arranged in advance.

Afternoon trek

Continue along a route selected for wildlife observation, trail conditions, and group ability.

Bohorok River and return

Rest beside the river, swim when conditions are safe, and return on foot or by traditional tube raft.

Clothing and footwear

Wear lightweight, breathable, quick-drying clothing. Choose comfortable walking shoes or secure trekking sandals with good grip. Avoid flip-flops and brand-new shoes.

Fitness and trail conditions

Average to good fitness is recommended. Trails may be steep, uneven, wet, muddy, and slippery. Tell us before booking about mobility limitations, injuries, or medical conditions.

Trekking with children

Children are welcome, but parents should consider whether their child can walk for several hours in hot and humid conditions. The pace and route may be adapted to family needs.

  • Keep the distance requested by your guide
  • Do not call, chase, or attract animals
  • Take all rubbish out of the forest
  • Follow your guide’s instructions
  • Tell us before the trek if you feel unwell
Return options

Return to Bukit Lawang on foot at no additional cost, or choose traditional tube rafting along the Bohorok River. The rafting option is normally €10 per person and supports the local rafting team.
