About the Trek
A genuine expedition for experienced adventurers
The 5 Days / 4 Nights Expedition Jungle trek takes you deeper into Gunung Leuser National Park than our shorter programmes. The extended route gives you time to explore remote rainforest around the Jambur Batu River, Landak River, and Bohorok River while moving through hills, valleys, streams, and dense tropical vegetation.
Your certified local guide will help you search for orangutans and other wildlife while sharing knowledge about rainforest ecology, animal behaviour, tropical trees, traditional medicinal plants, conservation, and practical jungle skills.
Possible wildlife sightings include Thomas’s leaf monkeys, white-handed gibbons, siamangs, long-tailed and pig-tailed macaques, hornbills, Great Argus birds, monitor lizards, snakes, squirrels, wild pigs, and wild Sumatran orangutans. All animals live freely, so sightings can never be guaranteed.

5-day Expedition Jungle itinerary
This is a flexible expedition itinerary. The exact route, campsites, daily walking time, river crossings, swimming, and rafting may change according to weather, water levels, trail conditions, wildlife activity, and the fitness and safety of the group.
Day One
Orangutan Habitat & First Jungle Camp
Morning — Guesthouse Pickup
Your guide collects you from your accommodation in Bukit Lawang, checks your equipment, and provides a safety briefing before the expedition begins.
Enter Gunung Leuser National Park
Begin trekking through lowland rainforest and hilly terrain while searching for orangutans, monkeys, gibbons, hornbills, reptiles, and other wildlife.
Rainforest Education
Learn about animal behaviour, tropical trees, medicinal plants, forest ecology, and the importance of responsible wildlife observation.
Lunch, Fruit & Afternoon Trek

Expedition Camp
Settle into the second camp, refresh beside the river when safe, enjoy dinner, and experience another night far from the village.
Day Three
Remote Valleys & Landak River
Continue into Remote Rainforest
After breakfast, continue through changing forest landscapes where trails may be steeper, rougher, and less frequently used.
Wildlife and Forest Signs
Your guide searches for nests, tracks, feeding signs, calls, and movement that may reveal orangutans or other animals nearby.
Landak River Landscape
Travel through the Landak River area, crossing or following waterways according to the safest available route.
Third Jungle Night
Arrive at the next riverside camp, enjoy freshly prepared food, and relax under the rainforest canopy.
Day Four
Bohorok River & Final Remote Camp
Full Expedition Day
Continue trekking through remote terrain with regular breaks for food, water, wildlife observation, and recovery.
Bohorok River System
Approach or follow sections of the Bohorok River system while learning how rivers shape the forest and support its wildlife.

Fourth and Final Camp

Final Trek & Jungle Rafting

Pack the final camp and complete the last section of jungle trekking while continuing to watch for wildlife.
Lunch Beside the River
Take a final meal break in the rainforest before preparing for the return journey.
Traditional Tube Rafting
Board a locally prepared tube raft and travel downstream through beautiful river scenery. Rafting duration depends on the final campsite and river conditions.
Return to Bukit Lawang

What to bring

Water and backpack weight
Bring or use the water bottle provided by the team. Drinking water is refilled at camp using boiled water. Pack only essential personal items and keep your backpack light, as you will carry it over steep, humid, wet, and uneven terrain for five days.
Clothing and footwear
Choose lightweight, breathable, and quick-drying clothes. Lightweight long sleeves and trousers provide extra protection, while a thin fleece or jacket can be useful at night. Wear broken-in trekking shoes or secure trail sandals with reliable grip. Do not trek in flip-flops or new shoes.
Fitness and difficulty
This expedition requires good fitness, balance, and confidence on natural terrain. Expect several hours of hiking per day, steep ascents and descents, roots, mud, high humidity, river crossings, and slippery paths. It is not recommended for young children, inexperienced walkers, or guests with serious mobility limitations.

- Keep food securely packed and remove all rubbish

Weather and itinerary changes
Rain is normal in the rainforest. Routes, campsites, river crossings, walking times, swimming, rafting, and the finishing time may change because of rainfall, river levels, fallen trees, wildlife activity, trail conditions, or other safety considerations.
Wildlife sightings
All wildlife lives freely in its natural habitat, so no sighting can be guaranteed. Five days provide more time to search and observe, but animal welfare, quiet behaviour, and responsible distance always come first.
