About the Trek

Experience the jungle beyond a day visit

The 2 Days / 1 Night Orangutan Trek is one of the best ways to experience the tropical rainforest of northern Sumatra. With more time inside the national park, you can walk at a natural pace, learn about the ecosystem, and enjoy the changing atmosphere of the jungle from morning until night.

Your certified local guide and porter will help you search for orangutans and other wildlife while explaining the rainforest’s flora, fauna, medicinal plants, and conservation challenges.

In the late afternoon, the team prepares a simple camp beside the river. You can swim when conditions are safe, relax, help prepare dinner, or simply listen to the forest before sleeping surrounded by the sounds of the river and wildlife.

  • Certified English-speaking guide and porter
  • One night in a traditional riverside jungle camp
  • Meals, fruit, hot drinks, snacks, and drinking water

Your Journey

2-day jungle trekking itinerary

The itinerary is indicative. Routes and timings may change according to weather, trail and river conditions, wildlife activity, and the fitness of the group.

Day One

Into the Heart of the Jungle

08:30 — Meet Your Guide

After breakfast, your guide collects you from your guesthouse in Bukit Lawang and leads you towards Gunung Leuser National Park.

Morning Wildlife Trek

Enter the rainforest and search for wild Sumatran orangutans while learning about local wildlife, trees, plants, and the forest ecosystem.

Fruit Break & Jungle Lunch

Rest beneath the canopy for fresh tropical fruit and an Indonesian fried-rice lunch before continuing deeper into the forest.

Afternoon Trekking

Look for Thomas’s leaf monkeys, gibbons, macaques, hornbills, great argus birds, monitor lizards, and other rainforest species.

Riverside Camp

Late in the afternoon, the team selects a suitable camp beside the river and prepares the sleeping area and evening meal.

Dinner & Jungle Night

Swim when conditions allow, relax by the river, enjoy dinner, and—when weather permits—share a campfire, games, and songs before sleeping in the jungle.

Day Two

Wildlife Encounters & River Adventure

Wake Up in the Rainforest

Start the day with the sounds of the jungle and river, followed by a warm homemade breakfast at camp.

Board a traditional tube raft and float down the Bohorok River, enjoying scenic jungle views on the return journey.

Prepare for Your Trek

Practical information

Open the sections below for packing guidance, trail conditions, wildlife rules, and other important information.

What to bring
  • Small backpack and change of clothes
  • Lightweight raincoat and swimwear
  • Small towel and optional small pillow
  • Personal toiletries, toilet paper, and medication
  • Camera, spare battery, and memory card in a waterproof bag
  • Insect repellent, sunscreen, and torch
  • Plastic bag for wet clothing
  • Sandals or flip-flops for use around camp only
Clothing and footwear

Wear comfortable, lightweight, quick-drying clothing. Long sleeves and trousers are optional. Nights can feel cool beside the river. Wear walking or trekking shoes with reliable grip for wet, muddy, and slippery trails.

Fitness and luggage

This trek is best suited to travellers with average to good fitness. Trails may be steep, uneven, wet, and physically demanding. Keep your trekking luggage light; ideally, your backpack should remain well below 10 kg.

Responsible wildlife rules
  • Never touch or feed orangutans or other wildlife
  • Keep the distance requested by your guide
  • Do not call, chase, or attract animals
  • Take all rubbish out of the forest
  • Follow guide instructions at all times
  • Tell us before the trek if you feel unwell
Weather and itinerary changes

Rain is a normal part of the rainforest experience. Routes, camp location, rafting, and finishing time may change when necessary because of weather, river levels, trail conditions, wildlife activity, or group safety.

Wildlife sightings

All animals live freely in their natural habitat, so sightings can never be guaranteed. The longer trek increases opportunities to see wildlife, but responsible observation always comes before getting close to an animal.
