Belitung is the stronger choice for classic granite beaches and island hopping. Bangka offers a broader story of coastal landscapes, Pangkalpinang, tin heritage, local food and road-based exploration.
Three or four days on one island often creates a better journey than trying to collect both in a hurried weekend.
Choose Your Base
Both islands share maritime culture, granite landscapes and tin history, but the rhythm and practical travel experience are different.
Arrive through Pangkalpinang and explore the Indonesian Tin Museum, local markets, Sungailiat, Matras, Parai, Muntok and the island’s Malay-Chinese food culture.
Base yourself around Tanjung Pandan or the Tanjung Kelayang coast, then travel by local boat to Lengkuas, Batu Berlayar and nearby islets before continuing to Tanjung Tinggi and East Belitung.
Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark
Belitong joined UNESCO’s Global Geoparks network in 2021 and remains listed in 2026. The geopark links land and sea, granite formations, mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass, mineral history and local communities across Belitung and its surrounding islands.

For a combined itinerary, an open-jaw plan—arriving on one island and departing from the other—may be more practical than returning to the same airport.
Official tourism guidance generally recommends the drier months from roughly March or April through October for clearer weather and calmer island-hopping conditions.
Public transport is limited outside main towns. A car with driver or carefully planned rental is usually the easiest way to connect beaches and inland sites.
Island-hopping departures and stopping points may change with wind, tide and sea conditions. Follow the boat crew’s safety decision.
ATMs and digital payments are easier in Pangkalpinang and Tanjung Pandan than at small beaches, villages and local boat departure areas.

Food is one of the clearest ways to experience the shared and different identities of Bangka and Belitung.
