One Province, Two Personalities

Do not rush the map. Choose the island that matches your journey.

Belitung is the stronger choice for classic granite beaches and island hopping. Bangka offers a broader story of coastal landscapes, Pangkalpinang, tin heritage, local food and road-based exploration.

Three or four days on one island often creates a better journey than trying to collect both in a hurried weekend.

Choose Your Base

Bangka for depth. Belitung for the iconic archipelago.

Both islands share maritime culture, granite landscapes and tin history, but the rhythm and practical travel experience are different.

01 · Bangka Island

Coastal roads, history and everyday island life

Arrive through Pangkalpinang and explore the Indonesian Tin Museum, local markets, Sungailiat, Matras, Parai, Muntok and the island’s Malay-Chinese food culture.

02 · Belitung Island

White sand, granite seas and island-hopping days

Base yourself around Tanjung Pandan or the Tanjung Kelayang coast, then travel by local boat to Lengkuas, Batu Berlayar and nearby islets before continuing to Tanjung Tinggi and East Belitung.

Best for First-time visitors seeking the province’s most iconic beaches and boat journeys.

Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark

A geological story that continues beyond the beach.

Belitong joined UNESCO’s Global Geoparks network in 2021 and remains listed in 2026. The geopark links land and sea, granite formations, mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass, mineral history and local communities across Belitung and its surrounding islands.

Why it matters: UNESCO describes a landscape that includes 241 surrounding islands and geological features connected to tectonic history, tin deposits and the region’s distinctive granite formations.
01

Tanjung Kelayang

The main departure area for classic island hopping and one of Belitung’s defining granite-and-sea landscapes.

02

Lengkuas Island

Reached by local boat, with a historic lighthouse, granite shore and clear-water scenery.

03

Granite & mangroves

The geopark is not only coastal. Forest, mangrove and inland geosites reveal older layers of Belitung’s natural history.

04

Tin-belt heritage

Mining shaped settlement, economy and landscapes. Visit with context rather than treating former mine sites only as photo stops.

Signature Experiences

Six ways to understand the islands

The strongest itinerary balances beach time with food, history, geology and encounters with local communities.

01

Granite island hopping

Depart from Tanjung Kelayang with a local boat crew for Lengkuas, Batu Berlayar and other small islands, depending on sea conditions.

Tin history in Pangkalpinang

The Indonesian Tin Museum explains the industry that shaped Bangka Belitung’s economy, migration and landscape.

Build the Right Journey

Three realistic ways to travel

Final timing depends on live flights, sea connections, weather and your arrival point. These are planning frameworks, not fixed departures.

01
Classic first visit

Belitung coast & island hopping

Tanjung Pandan, Tanjung Kelayang, Lengkuas, Tanjung Tinggi and an East Belitung cultural day.

4 days
02
Culture & road trip

Bangka city, heritage and beaches

Bangka and Belitung together

Use separate arrival and departure airports where practical, or confirm the current inter-island sea connection before booking.

Travel Desk · 2026

Plan each island through its own gateway.

Flight routes and inter-island services can change. Confirm live schedules before arranging hotels, transfers or a same-day connection.

Two airport strategy

Choose the airport that matches the island.

For a combined itinerary, an open-jaw plan—arriving on one island and departing from the other—may be more practical than returning to the same airport.

PGK · Depati Amir Airport
Gateway for Pangkalpinang and Bangka Island.
TJQ · H.A.S. Hanandjoeddin Airport
Gateway for Tanjung Pandan and Belitung Island.
01

Best sea conditions are seasonal

Official tourism guidance generally recommends the drier months from roughly March or April through October for clearer weather and calmer island-hopping conditions.

02

Private transport is practical

Public transport is limited outside main towns. A car with driver or carefully planned rental is usually the easiest way to connect beaches and inland sites.

03

Boat routes depend on weather

Island-hopping departures and stopping points may change with wind, tide and sea conditions. Follow the boat crew’s safety decision.

04

Carry cash outside towns

ATMs and digital payments are easier in Pangkalpinang and Tanjung Pandan than at small beaches, villages and local boat departure areas.

Taste the Province

Seafood, spice and coffee between two islands

Food is one of the clearest ways to experience the shared and different identities of Bangka and Belitung.

Lempah kuning A tangy, spiced fish dish strongly associated with Bangka.
Gangan Belitung fish soup with a bright, aromatic local flavour.
Otak-otak Grilled fish cake served with sauce, especially popular in Bangka.
Mie Belitung Noodles in a distinctive shrimp-based gravy with local toppings.
Kemplang & getas Crisp fish-based snacks often taken home as souvenirs.
Manggar coffee A relaxed coffee-town tradition worth adding to East Belitung.

Travel Beyond the Photograph

Protect the coast and understand the mining story.

Beautiful water in former mining landscapes does not automatically mean safe swimming. Ask local authorities or guides before entering unfamiliar lakes or pits.

1
Do not climb restricted lighthouse structures Access conditions can change. Follow local signs and staff instructions.
2
Leave granite and coral where they belong Do not collect stones, shells, coral or marine life as souvenirs.
3
Use reef-safe behaviour Never stand on coral, feed fish or leave plastic on boats and beaches.
4
Support local crews and food businesses Local guides, drivers, boat crews and family-run restaurants keep tourism value in the islands.
5
Visit former mine landscapes with context These places are connected to work, environmental change and regional history—not only colour and photography.

Frequently asked questions

Should we choose Bangka or Belitung?
Choose Belitung for the best-known granite beaches and island hopping. Choose Bangka for a more varied road journey combining culture, tin history, food and beaches.
How long do we need?
Allow at least three to four nights for one island. Combining both is more comfortable with seven days or longer, depending on the current air or sea connection.
Can Bangka and Belitung be visited as a day trip?
They are separate islands, so a day trip between them is generally not a sensible travel plan. Treat each as a destination with its own airport, transport and accommodation.
When is the best time for island hopping?
The drier period from around March or April through October is generally preferred, but wind, rain and sea conditions still need to be checked locally on the day.
Where do Belitung island-hopping boats depart?
Tanjung Kelayang is the principal departure point for the classic route. Boats can also operate from other coastal areas, depending on the itinerary and operator.
Is Lengkuas Lighthouse always open for climbing?
Do not assume access is available. The island and lighthouse can still be visited, but climbing rules may change for maintenance and safety reasons.
Can this journey be combined with Bukit Lawang?
Yes, but it requires a flight connection and careful scheduling. Bangka Belitung lies off Sumatra’s eastern side, while Bukit Lawang is in North Sumatra. Allow buffer time between separate flight tickets.
