Journey into the Jungle: Meeting the Sumatran Orangutans of Bukit Lawang

If there’s one experience that made us feel small in the presence of nature, it was locking eyes with a Sumatran orangutan in the depths of the rainforest — in Bukit Lawang, on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, North Sumatra.
The journey began in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra. After a 3-4 hours drive through small villages and rice fields, we arrived in Bukit Lawang, a riverside village nestled in the jungle. The Bohorok River flows through the heart of the village, bringing life to locals and visitors alike.

Early the next morning, we joined a half-day jungle trekking tour led by a seasoned local guide. As we stepped into the thick rainforest, the air turned humid and heavy with the scent of earth and foliage. The sounds of insects, birds, and distant gibbons echoed all around us — nature’s own orchestra.

It didn’t take long before we spotted them. A female orangutan swung gracefully from the trees, while her young clung to her side and curiously watched us. It was a magical moment. Our guide explained that Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered, with their numbers rapidly declining due to deforestation and habitat loss.
Watching them move and interact in their natural environment stirred something deep inside us. There was a familiar intelligence in their eyes — a sense of curiosity, caution, and warmth.
The trek ended in the most thrilling way: tubing down the Bohorok River! Floating on giant rubber tubes, we laughed and splashed our way back to the village, carried by the current and surrounded by jungle.
That evening, we stayed in a humble eco-lodge, nestled by the river. The jungle sounds lulled me to sleep — insects chirping, leaves rustling, and water trickling nearby.
Bukit Lawang isn’t just about seeing orangutans. It’s about reconnecting with nature, respecting wildlife, and realizing that conservation isn’t a distant idea — it’s something we’re all part of.
we returned home with a full heart — filled with wonder, awareness, and gratitude. If you’re seeking a soulful adventure and the chance to encounter one of the world’s most remarkable creatures, Bukit Lawang is calling.
