The real hidden paradise

A community-led nature destination at the meeting of forest and water.

Tangkahan is located in Langkat Regency at the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park. The village is surrounded by tropical forest and sits near the meeting of the Buluh and Batang Serangan rivers.

Tangkahan is at its best when the schedule stays simple: walk, listen, swim when conditions are safe, and let the landscape set the pace.

Elephants with dignity

Observation and education come before entertainment.

Tangkahan is home to a conservation herd of Sumatran elephants cared for by mahouts and associated with forest patrol work. Any visit should prioritise elephant welfare and current local guidance.

1
No elephant riding Bukit Lawang Travel does not promote riding, tricks or performance-style activities.
2
Never force contact Bathing, feeding or close interaction should never happen merely for a photograph or fixed tourist schedule.
3
Follow the mahout and conservation team Distance, timing and access must be decided according to the animals’ welfare and daily management.
4
Choose learning over touching Observation, forest context and conservation education create a more meaningful wildlife experience.
Conservation herd

Rescued elephants supporting forest protection

The local Tangkahan eco-tourism organisation describes a herd of nine Sumatran elephants rescued from human–elephant conflict. The elephants and mahouts have been linked to patrol and conservation work in the Gunung Leuser landscape.

Experience the landscape

Six reasons to stay longer than one day

Tangkahan is more than an elephant stop. The rivers, forest, local guides and quiet village rhythm are the real foundation of the journey.

01

Guided jungle trekking

Explore rainforest trails, trees, plants, caves and wildlife signs with a licensed or locally recognised guide.

Wildlife is never guaranteed
02

River tubing

Float along a suitable section of river when water level and current are judged safe by the local team.

Weather dependent
03

Waterfalls and river pools

Walk to a waterfall or enjoy clear-water swimming only where local conditions, depth and current allow.

Use local guidance
04

Natural hot-spring area

Discover warm-water places near the river as part of a guided local walk rather than a developed spa experience.

Simple and natural
05

Community stories

Learn how local tourism developed from a community decision to protect the surrounding forest and create alternative livelihoods.

Support local businesses
06

Slow riverside time

Read, listen to the forest, eat local food and enjoy a destination that does not need a full schedule to feel rewarding.

Travel without rushing
03

Suggested journey

Three days of river, forest and community

This sample plan stays flexible. Rain, river conditions, animal welfare, road access and guide availability should shape each day.

01
Arrival and riverside orientation

Travel to Tangkahan and slow down

Arrive from Medan or Bukit Lawang, cross into the village area, settle into your lodge and enjoy a gentle riverside walk.

Private transfer · lodge check-in · village orientation · local dinner
02
Forest and conservation

Jungle walk and responsible elephant learning

Explore the forest with a local guide and, when available and welfare-appropriate, learn about the conservation herd from a respectful distance.

No riding · no forced interaction · guide-led forest experience
03
River morning and onward journey

Tubing, waterfall or quiet river time

Choose an activity according to current conditions, then continue towards Bukit Lawang, Medan or your next North Sumatra destination.

Water-level check · flexible departure · no tight flight connection

Getting to Tangkahan

The final road is part of the adventure.

Private transport is the most comfortable choice, especially for international travellers with luggage or a combined Bukit Lawang itinerary. Road conditions and journey times can change.

From Medan

Private car through Binjai and Langkat towards Tangkahan.

Approx. 3.5–5.5 hrs

From Kualanamu Airport

Direct transfer is possible, but allow extra time for traffic.

Approx. 4.5–6.5 hrs

From Bukit Lawang

Private cross-country transfer through the Langkat region.

Approx. 2.5–4 hrs

Public transport

Possible with several changes, but less practical with luggage and limited time.

Allow most of a day

All times are estimates. Traffic, rainfall, roadworks, damaged road sections and the exact pickup location can significantly affect travel.

Choose the right stay

Select by location and atmosphere, not only by lodge name.

Tangkahan accommodation is generally simple and close to nature. Electricity, Wi-Fi, hot water and room standards can differ, so confirm the facilities that matter to you before booking.

Riverside Best for atmosphere, water views and easy access to village life.
Forest edge Quieter, greener and well suited to travellers prioritising nature.
Village side Useful for local food, guides, transport and everyday services.
01

River safety

Do not swim or tube without a local assessment of current, depth and recent rainfall.

02

Jungle clothing

Wear quick-drying clothes, covered shoes, long socks and carry rain protection.

03

Cash and signal

Bring enough rupiah and do not rely on stable mobile data or card payments.

04

Drinking water

Use sealed or properly filtered water and bring a reusable bottle where refill facilities are available.

05

Wildlife expectations

Wild animals are never guaranteed. Do not feed, call, touch or block wildlife.

06

Travel insurance

Choose cover appropriate for jungle trekking, tubing, remote roads and medical evacuation.

Frequently asked questions

How many nights should we stay in Tangkahan?
Two nights are enough for a short introduction. Three nights give more flexibility for rain, trekking, river activities and a relaxed conservation-focused visit.
Does Bukit Lawang Travel offer elephant riding?
No. We do not promote elephant riding, tricks or performance-style tourism. Any elephant-related visit should prioritise observation, education and the daily welfare needs of the animals.
Can we bathe or feed the elephants?
Do not assume close interaction will be available. Current rules, animal welfare, mahout guidance and the elephants’ condition must decide whether any contact is appropriate. Observation is always an acceptable alternative.
Is Tangkahan suitable for children?
It can be suitable for active families, but paths, river crossings, tropical weather and basic facilities require supervision and a realistic assessment of each child’s ability.
Can we visit Tangkahan as a day trip?
A day trip is possible from some locations, but long driving times make it rushed. At least one or two nights create a much better experience.
Can Tangkahan be combined with Bukit Lawang?
Yes. Combining the two destinations is one of the most practical North Sumatra routes: Bukit Lawang for orangutan trekking and Tangkahan for rivers, community tourism and slower forest time.
